ABOUT THE PROJECT

Descent From Beauty is an evening-length dance work that tells the story of Venus and Andromeda. Featuring an architectural stage, Descent From Beauty asks new questions about social justice, movement and embodiment, and art and architecture.

Responding to Rodin’s “Toilette of Venus and Andromeda,” Descent restores Venus and Andromeda’s racial and ethnic backgrounds and invents a story for them, exploring the women’s relationship with each other and the effects of heterosexual, masculinized notions of beauty on their lives.

Designed by Sara Hendren, Yevgeniya Zastavker, and students at Olin College, the ramp creates an immersive environment, challenging conventional notions of access.
