ABOUT THE PROJECT
Drawing upon Ni’Ja’s previous work and exploration of gender and historic African ritual practices, Oba Qween Baba King Baba explores identity and the role of gender in the divine. It also interrogates the masculine control within these roles and their influence over the histories of spirituality and religion. This developing work is an interdisciplinary performance project that uses movement, poetry, improvisation, jazz, African dance, textile art and more to uncover our historic perception of sexual orientation within religious contexts.
