MAP has two distinct phases of application and review:

Round One: September 26 – October 28, 2016

Eligibility Review: October 29 – November 14, 2016

Alignment Review: November 14 – January 3, 2017

Round Two: January 4 – February 21, 2017

Final Review: February 22 – April 30, 2017

Open call for applicants to submit online proposals for original, live performance-based projects that strongly align with MAP’s program goals.

The online portal will accept Round One applications through 11:59 p.m. Eastern on October 28, 2016. Late proposals will not be accepted for any reason.

Eligibility Review

MAP staff screen all proposals for eligibility.

  1. Ineligible applicants will be notified by November 18, 2016.
  2. MAP staff assign remaining eligible projects to external reviewers for the Alignment Review.

Alignment Review

MAP hires new external reviewers each year based on the number of eligible applications we receive. Each reviewer assesses up to 100 applications, and each application is seen by 5 reviewers. Reviewers meet remotely as a group, by discipline, to share insights, ask questions, and provide MAP staff with process feedback.

  1. Reviewers write comments and assign a numerical value to how well a project aligns with each of our funding goals. On a 1-4 scale, a score of 4 indicates strong alignment.
  2. MAP staff average and rank the scores for each criterion. A final list of the top scoring projects in “deep inquiry” and in “challenging hierarchies” determines which applicants in the pool most strongly align with MAP’s funding priorities. These applicants will be invited to Round Two of the application process.
  3. All eligible applicants will be notified of review results by January 4, 2017.

Applicants who are invited to Round Two must submit all requested materials by February 21, 2017 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern. Late proposals will not be accepted for any reason.

Final Review

At this stage, every applicant is eligible and strongly aligns with MAP’s mission based on the two prior assessments. MAP hires a new body of panelists to review Round One and Two materials among applicants in the final pool. The cohort convenes live, discusses applications, and recommends projects for funding.

In addition to program alignment, panelists are tasked with achieving the greatest expression of diversities in the final list of grantees (aesthetic, racial, ethnic, gender, geographic, career stage, budget size, social impact, independent artists and those connected to institutions).

Panelists are required to arrive at collective consensus in their decision-making. MAP staff does not participate in voting, but facilitates the conversations such that MAP’s funding parameters are consistently central to the deliberation.

  1. Results of the Final Review will be sent to all Round Two applicants in April 2017.
  2. After the panel convening, MAP staff requests budget updates and web materials from applicants who have been recommended for funding.
  3. MAP staff determines award amounts based on project budgets, and MAP’s available resources.
  4. MAP Fund’s Board of Directors approves the final list of grantees.
  5. Contracts and award distribution occur between May and June 2017.

Eligibility Review: Applicants will learn why their project was determined ineligible in their email notification letter by November 18, 2016. Due to our limited staffing resources, no further feedback will be provided to projects deemed ineligible.

Alignment Review: Applicants who will not move forward to the final review stage will receive their numerical ranking and written reviewer comments beginning in January 2017.

Applicants who will move forward to the final review round will also receive reviewer comments in early January 2017 to help improve their Final Round applications.

Final Review: Applicants whose proposals were reviewed in the Final Round but did not receive a grant may schedule a phone conversation with MAP staff to take place beginning in May 2017. The period of feedback ends on June 30. Any request made after that date will likely not be met.
