ABOUT THE PROJECT
Red Onion is a multimedia performance addressing issues of mass incarceration and named for a supermax prison located in the coalfields of Virginia. Red Onion will locate the prison in space, time and memory, telling the stories of those impacted by it. While initially a collaboration between media artist Nick Szuberla (who shot an investigative documentary about the prison) and writer and poet Dwayne Betts (who was incarcerated there), the circle of collaboration will expand to include additional artists and stakeholders. The premiere will take place in September 2020 and present stories and multimedia experiences that show the passage of time and the realities of the American prison system.
