ABOUT THE GRANT

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Sutrajaal is a project of Ananya Dance Theatre (ADT) and The O’Shaughnessy at St. Catherine University. This work launches “In Response,” a multi-year, multi-dance series of artistic rejoinders to urgent issues in global communities of color.

Choreographed by Ananya Chatterjea, this 90-minute production is set against and within the backdrop of increasingly diverse racial and ethnic communities in Minneapolis-St. Paul that often remain segregated from each other and figure in the larger body politic primarily as ‘census data’ and ‘vote banks.’

Like a delicate spider’s web, spun from the spider’s body to connect the hard corners of two unmoving walls, the juxtaposed stories of Sutrajaal will negotiate the tensions and resonances among memory fragments, historic references, and visions of future horizons.

The project will investigate several questions: How do different communities of color come to know each other and build solidarity? How did we meet? Did our ancestral lines cross? How do women of color make history through everyday life? How do communities show up for each other?

The production will premiere in St. Paul, MN as part of The O’Shaughnessy’s Women of Substance series in September 2019.
