ABOUT THE GRANT
- $40,500 to Virginia Commonwealth University Foundation/Institute for Contemporary Art to support The Power of the Narrator (MAP 2018)
ABOUT THE PROJECT
The Power of the Narrator reimagines vintage lantern slides with animation, new composition, live music, and theatrical performance. This work will bring to life derogatory lantern-slide stories that portray black Americans as lazy, stupid, crooked, thieves, shifty, and other negative stereotypes that were used to dehumanize a whole group of humans.
The Power of the Narrator will address the need for more people to hear and understand how narrative in American history has been controlled by those in power, and the manipulative power of that control.
The driving perspective for this work arises from critiquing the pervasive narrative in American history that rarely addresses the uncomfortable stereotypes subjected to black Americans.
